Bungaree’s Farm is an exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal audio, video, performance and installation art exploring Bungaree’s legacy. Bungaree, known as the Chief of the Broken Bay Aborigines, was a central figure in early Colonial Sydney. As an Aboriginal leader, he was the first person known to have been called an ‘Australian’. His story presents a rich and layered history of one man’s remarkable exploits and ability to navigate calamitous times to become a highly respected leader and bridge between Aboriginal and white cultures.

Bungaree’s Farm was commissioned in 2015 to mark the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Bungaree’s Farm by Governor Macquarie on 31 January 1815. The exhibition is the result of a series of intensive residency workshops led by renowned Aboriginal curator Djon Mundine OAM, and was originally showcased in the T5 Camouflage Fuel Tank (a large scale former WWII naval fuel tank at Georges Heights) on the site of Bungaree’s Farm, in 2015.

The exhibition has previously toured across Australia and has been the recipient of numerous awards. It was the 2015 National Winner of the Museums and Galleries National Awards and was recognised at the Best in Heritage conference in Dubrovnik as a project of global significance.

The exhibition covers the following themes: Travelling Bungaree, Being Bungaree, Walking Bungaree, Singing Bungaree and Team Bungaree.

Participating artists: Daniel Boyd, Blak Douglas, Karla Dickens, Leah Flanagan, Amala Groom, Warwick Keen, Peter McKenzie, Djon Mundine OAM, Caroline Oakley, Bjorn Stewart, Leanne Tobin, Jason Wing, Chantal Woods and Sandy Woods.

This presentation of Bungaree’s Farm is part of Mosman Art Gallery’s series of contemporary visual art exhibitions timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s voyage to Australia and the Pacific in 1770.
