Burrows Garden and Kirton Gallery, Canyonleigh; Sturt Gallery & Café, Mittagong; and Sandy Lockwood Studio and Gallery Visit

Join the Friends of the Mosman Art Gallery for a day in the Southern Highlands enjoying art, craft and gardens, as well as very fine company.

Our day begins with a visit to the Burrows Garden and Kirton Gallery at Canyonleigh. The garden is a magnificent cool climate garden spread over 10 acres that has featured in the Australian Open Garden Scheme, as well as a small private Gallery featuring the work of John Kirton and his ‘impresionist’ style artwork. The garden has been produced from scratch over the last 10 years by John and Susan Carter. For a garden of such tender years, the look of ‘age’ and abundant growth is amazing. After morning tea explore the garden with its blend of informal and formal elements, cottage gardens, specimen trees, roses, clipped hedges and water elements such as dams, streams and refelection ponds.

Following our visit to the Garden we will travel to the Sturt Gallery and Café. After a light lunch in the café cottage and its beautiful cottage garden’ staff from Sturt Gallery will introduce us to the complex and gallery exhibition. Sturt is a centre for excellence for the teaching and promotion of Australian Contemporary Craft and design, especially in the areas of jewellery, wood, ceramics and weaving. It consists of an exhibition space, a shop, café and workshops. On exhibition will the weaving and textile art work of a master of Australian Craft, living treasure Liz Williamson.

Closely associated with Sturt is distinguished ceramicist, and teacher Sandy Lockwood. On our return journey to Sydney we will visit Sandy’s studio and gallery. Sandy is a master potter who specializes in wood firing and salt glazing techniques. Her work ranges from beautiful sculptural pieces, tableware and tea ware and features in collections all around the world.
